And by good times, we mean more Book Club announcements.
Without further ado… Chain-Gang All-Stars by Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah will be the Bookum Book Club pick for September!
Nana will join us throughout the month to discuss the book and provide additional insights.
Bookish content creator, the wonderful Sol, will be our guest moderator for the club.
Summary:
"Chain-Gang All-Stars is a dystopian satirical novel by Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah. In an alternate near-future United States, incarcerated people facing either execution or 25-plus years of imprisonment can elect to become Gladiators in lieu of their original sentence."

Since 2020, they have been gaining a lot of momentum in New York (we went to Book Club Bar, of course).

Book bars take two third places, bookstores and wine bars, and turn them into one community haven.
A few that have emerged recently include:
Liz’s Book Bar (launched by author Maura Cheeks), Anaïs, Honey Moon, Topos, and Soho’s Bibliotheque, founded by Dr. Andrew Jacono and his writer son AJ Jacono, to name a few.
They are fascinating places, and we hope to see more of them around the country. Maybe a few book content creators will open their own 👀

We almost made it out of this newsletter without a sports reference… but let us introduce you to Effa Manley, the subject of Kaia Alderson's new book In a League of Her Own: A Novel.
Manley is the only woman ever inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame.
