The Power of Bookish Influence, This Great Hemisphere, & Other Bookum News

Abby Jimenez, Mateo Askaripour, Celebrity Book Clubs

Happy Tuesday!

It's our favorite time of the year…

The week after the 4th, where we receive endless laughs from firework celebrations gone wrong.

This year's top entry… Enjoy!

This Week's Fireworks:

  • 📚 Jam-Packed Week on Bookum

  •  📺 The Power of Bookish Influence

  • 📖 New Book by Mateo Askaripour

This Week On Bookum:

No new product updates this week… (Although the team is working on fixing review bombing that occurs a lot in the book space. If you write helpful book reviews, please reply to this email with "I'm nice with it"🤣 or anything in that ballpark).

This week we have two podcasts (Nooks) & a reading sprint!

Today, at 7:30 PM EST, join us for a Creators Talk Podcast with Dawnshaeé Reid.

We will discuss books, community spaces, and an Introduction to Eclecticism.

And on Thursday…

Join us for a crash course conversation on the world of ghostwriting with the founder of The Pocket PhD, Emily Crookston, at 3:30 PM EST.

Both conversations will air live on Bookum in the nook space (click the "Discover" tab on the bottom navigation bar).

Lastly.

On Friday at 4 PM EST, join us for a Reading/Productivity Sprint to end the workweek.

Bring a book, a laptop, and a bevy. Let's chat and read!

This Week in The Book World:

I stumbled across some wholesome content this week and figured I’d share.

I call this… The Power of Bookish Influence.

Take a look at Exhibit A (note, this will be the only exhibit entered into evidence, your honor).

What do you notice? (Well, besides the obvious 😎)

Five of the six top 10 books of 2024 in sales you probably saw on your timeline no less than 40 times (probably per day on some feeds).

Don’t believe me?

Here are the numbers:

On TikTok:

Funny Story by Emily Henry: 10.4M posts.

The Women by Kristin Hannah: 1.8M posts.

Bride by Ali Hazelwood: 6.5M posts.

Just for the Summer by Abby Jimenez: 4.9M posts.

House of Flame and Shadow by Sarah J. Maas: 5.6M posts.

On Instagram:

#EmilyHenry: 192K posts.

#KristinHannah: 118K posts.

#AliHazelwood: 163K posts.

#AbbyJimenez: 48.8K posts.

Takeaways:

  1. Holy moly, social media.

  2. The power of bookish influence is undervalued.

  3. ARCs machine at work.

The first two are obvious. Let’s talk about the third one.

One free book put in, 100,000 eyeballs spit out.

Do this a few times, and now you create FOMO-OTC (fear of missing out on the conversation) among creators.

Winner… not always the author,

(listen to our conversations with Kathleen Schmidt & Brooke Warner, who have a combined 50+ years of publishing experience),

but always the publisher (Book Market: $132.4 billion in 2023).

What does this mean for creators?

Remember your value in the book market. Have some ownership of your influence.

That may look like membership-only spaces (Choose Bookum😊😊 ),

  • Paid advertisement/sponsorships

  • Author services

  • Brand Campaigns/Partnerships

At Bookum, our mission is to serve bookish content creators through dynamic book club tools, monetization, or just widespread information for longer-form discussions.

*Please note, nothing against these authors at all. They are quite literally book creators.*

**Also, books (stories) have always been passed orally and through word of mouth. It’s always okay to share books you absolutely love.**

This Week in Publishing:

New York Times Bestselling Author Mateo Askaripour is back with another book sure to get the people going.

Mateo's new book, This Great Hemisphere, is out today!

Summary:

“Despite the odds, Sweetmint, a young invisible woman, has done everything right her entire life—school, university, and now a highly sought-after apprenticeship with the Northwestern Hemisphere’s premier inventor, a non-invisible man belonging to the Dominant Population who is as eccentric as he is enigmatic.

But the world she has fought so hard to build after the disappearance of her older brother comes crashing down when authorities claim that not only is he well and alive, he’s also the main suspect in the murder of the Chief Executive of the Northwestern Hemisphere.”

Whenever a book gets praise from Brit Bennett, you know it should be good!

Add the book to your Bookum TBR list and get your copy today!
