Our Bookum Club pick for May is…

What Winners Won't Tell You by two-time Super Bowl Champion Malcolm Jenkins.

About the Book:
Over the course of his thirteen-year NFL career, the now-retired defensive back’s triumphs extend beyond the football field. As a successful entrepreneur, he has seen the blossoming of his business ventures with an eponymous company, Malcolm Inc., and a media conglomerate called Listen Up Media. As a philanthropist, he strives to make a positive difference in the lives of young people in underserved communities through The Malcolm Jenkins Foundation. And as the father of two daughters, he understands the challenges of loving his children and preparing them for an often unkind and hostile world. But for every triumph, there is a tragedy—for every loss, a lesson.

In What Winners Won’t Tell You, Jenkins shares the insight he’s gained from winning and losing alike. One moment, Jenkins is riding high from being the only NFL player to have Super Bowl victories against Hall of Fame quarterbacks Peyton Manning and Tom Brady — and then he’s navigating the harrowing low of a divorce from the mother of his children. In another moment, he’s advocating for the advancement of Black people in America — and then feuding publicly about the direction of this advocacy.

And wait, there’s more…

Malcolm is joining our Bookum Club to discuss the book!

The full conversation with Malcolm will be out next week, so be on the lookout!

This book is phenomenal, honest, and I believe you will absolutely love it!

Come discuss the book throughout the month of May with our Book Club on Bookum!

This Week in The Book World:

As always, you know our favorite motto (We Shoutout Creators) — but this week we are extra excited because we get to shout out a friend of Bookum and two-time guest on the Creators Talk Podcast, the always spectacular Traci Thomas of The Stacks Podcast.

Traci and her team pulled off an amazing event to replenish the books lost in the LA fires earlier this year.

Designed as a fun-filled gathering to bring the joy of reading back to those most impacted — and to help people rebuild their personal libraries.

Thousands of books were donated, over 100 people volunteered, authors did signings, people read to kids, vendors supported, and the community showed up and showed out!

Author of Black Candle Women and attendee Diane Marie Brown said:

“[Yesterday’s] Stack the Shelves event blew my mind, a wonderful way to support those affected by the SoCal fires and a reminder that those affected continue to need our attention, resources, and care.” (via Instagram story caption)

The event had over 262 supporters and raised over $30,083

We’ll make sure to show all the photos, but just wanted to highlight the amazing things happening in the book community and the creators in the space! https://www.instagram.com/p/DJRr-Y0OLS_/

You can still donate today to help them reach their target goal!

This Week in Publishing:

Have you ever heard of Bibliotherapy?

By the book (no pun intended), it is:

“a creative arts therapy that involves storytelling or the reading of specific texts, also referred to as book therapy.”

Why is this important?

Well, this week, the highly anticipated Bibliotherapy in the Bronx was released by author Emely Rumble, LCSW | Bibliotherapist.

Summary:

"In this transformative work, Rumble offers readers an intimate glimpse into her journey as a psychotherapist in the Bronx, where she has spent over 14 years using books to help clients navigate complex emotions, heal from trauma, and find their voices. Through vivid anecdotes and real-world case studies, she demonstrates how literature can serve as a bridge between personal pain and collective healing.

Rich with practical tips, reflective exercises, and book recommendations, Bibliotherapy in the Bronx is a valuable resource for anyone interested in the power of words to change lives.”

This is a book for all our educators, teachers, leaders, and therapists looking to better help the communities they work in!
